Why learn technical dive skills?

Why would one want to start tec diving? I mean you have to worry about all that extra gear. You spend all that time planning. It all seems like too much work. Right?

Well, Tec diving does require significantly more effort, discipline and equipment. This is all true because there is more risk involved. It definitely is not fore everyone, but on the other hand, anyone who puts in the effort and has the discipline to learn to technical dive will come away a better diver. Some of the benefits of tec:

·     You can visit dive sites that few other divers can. There are some incredible dive sites below 130 feet; you can see untouched wrecks and unique reefs.

·     For those who enjoy a challenge, tec diving provides the challenge that other dives may not.

·     And then there are the dive skills that tec divers learn or master. Even if one decides after the course that they are not comfortable with the risks of technical diving, the dive skills they master will serve them regardless of the diving they seek to pursue:

o   Buoyancy – this is the most critical for a tec diver, and one that a tec diver masters beyond the requirements of the average diver, and onethey must be able to execute while heavily task loaded, something that any underwater photographer can appreciate.

o   Dive planning – every diver is taught to “plan the dive and dive the plan” but many get complacent and loose this habit. Proper dive planning is emphasized in technical diving.

o   Emergency management – tec diving reviews common dive emergencies and challenges the diver, making him better prepared to handle emergencies.

o   Decompression – occasionally, a recreational diver exceeds his dive limits and is forced to make an emergency decompression. This can be avery stressful experience. A trained tec diver will be better prepared to execute a decompression schedule because they will have practiced it multiple times.

o   Stage bottles usage – occasionally recreational divers will takeup using a pony bottle as an alternate air sources in the case of an out of air situation. A tec diver becomes comfortable switching between gas cylinders during a dive.

o   Confidence – completing a technical dive course will test you, and succeeding at these tests will give you greater confidence as a diver.
